The Ogun State Police have taken action against officers involved in a viral video that showed them assaulting and extorting a 24-year-old woman, Soyemi Funmilola, at a checkpoint near the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode.

Following the victim’s report of the assault and extortion on January 23, 2024, the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) conducted an investigation into the matter. As a result, the officers faced an orderly room trial and were issued an official query, in line with the directives of the Commissioner of Police. The provost department is overseeing the disciplinary proceedings.

The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the investigation substantiated the officers’ misconduct, including tracing the account where the extorted money was deposited. The recovered money has been marked as evidence. Odutola emphasized the command’s stance against any form of misconduct that violates the ethical standards expected of police officers.

Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu has stressed the importance of respecting citizens’ fundamental human rights in various seminars conducted for the command’s officers and men. He has committed to sanctioning any officer found to have infringed on the public’s rights.

The family members of the complainant have been contacted and are in discussions with the commissioner, who assured them that the officers would be held accountable for failing to adhere to the force’s rules and regulations.

Odutola reiterated the command’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of residents and their properties. She emphasized the commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining a transparent and respectful relationship, as outlined in the Police Rules and Regulations.

“The Inspector, Rank, and File officers have been detained for an orderly room trial, and the officers involved have been issued an official query. The outcome of the orderly room proceedings will be made public once the investigation is concluded,” she added.
