The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Dr Sule Abdulaziz, has highlighted the potential of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) “North Core Project” to significantly enhance electricity supply in the sub-region. Speaking at the 7th meeting of the Joint Supervision Committee of the pool in Abuja, Abdulaziz, who also serves as the Executive Board Chairman of WAPP, emphasized the project’s transformative impact on energy poverty and the overall living standards of communities.

Abdulaziz emphasized that the North Core Project represents a fundamental shift in power generation and distribution strategies, aiming to provide electricity to underserved areas. He highlighted the project’s goal of bringing power to essential facilities such as schools, clinics, and businesses that have historically faced energy shortages.

According to him, the project is not only about electricity transmission but also about fostering socioeconomic progress and unlocking the region’s full potential. The TCN boss commended the collaborative efforts of Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo in addressing their collective electricity challenges through the North Core Project. He underscored the project’s significance in addressing the electricity supply-demand imbalance within the ECOWAS region, highlighting its role in promoting efficient energy trade and fostering commercial exchange agreements.

Abdulaziz outlined the project’s scope, which includes the construction of high-voltage transmission lines, substations, and the deployment of advanced technologies like SCADA systems and fiber optics cables. He emphasized that the project aims to create an interconnected network that will redefine the energy landscape of the region. In his remarks, WAPP Secretary-General, Mr Siengui Apollinaire KI, expressed confidence in the project’s progress, noting that significant milestones had been achieved since its launch in 2019.

He highlighted the enthusiasm and hope among residents of the involved countries and reiterated the commitment to achieving the project’s goals within the stipulated timeframe.
