Supreme Court Overrules Appeal Court, Declares Abba Yusuf Winner in Kano Election Dispute

The Supreme Court has criticized the rulings of both the Appeal Court and the Election Petitions Tribunal, which had previously nullified the election of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf. The Tribunal’s decision in September had overturned Yusuf’s election victory by deducting 165,663 votes from his total of 1,019,602, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

Following this, Yusuf appealed the decision at the Appeal Court, but the court upheld the tribunal’s ruling. However, the Supreme Court, in its recent judgement, asserted that Yusuf, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), was the rightful winner of the election.

The Supreme Court’s intervention has brought a new turn to the Kano State gubernatorial election saga, overturning the decisions of the lower courts and affirming Yusuf’s victory. This decision has significant implications for the political landscape in Kano State and the wider Nigerian political sphere.

The apex court’s ruling underscores the importance of upholding the democratic process and ensuring that electoral outcomes accurately reflect the will of the people. It also highlights the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding the integrity of elections and resolving disputes to uphold justice and fairness.
