Dangote Petroleum Refinery Commences Production, Poised to Meet Nigeria’s Energy Needs

Dangote Petroleum Refinery, the world’s largest single-train refinery located in Lagos, Nigeria, has initiated the production of refined petroleum products with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. This significant development marks a milestone for the refinery, which commenced production on Friday after receiving the final 6th batch of one million barrels of crude oil needed for its initial operations.

The refinery had previously announced its readiness to begin production, and this recent achievement follows the receipt of the first one million barrels of Agbami crude grade from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited about a month ago. Subsequently, the refinery received the crude oil in batches, with the 6th batch of one million barrels of Agbami crude being discharged at the Single Point Mooring at the Dangote Offshore Oil Terminal.

Akin Omole, the Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, highlighted the significance of the refinery’s operations, stating that the delivery of the six million barrels of crude oil would facilitate the initial run of the refinery and the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), followed by the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The successful operation of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is expected to address fuel supply challenges not only in Nigeria but also in West African countries. The refinery, if operational, is capable of meeting 100 per cent of Nigeria’s refined product requirements, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel, with a surplus available for export.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his New Year broadcast, hinted at the expected commencement of operations at the Port Harcourt and Dangote refineries in January 2024, underscoring the significance of these developments for Nigeria’s energy sector and the broader economy.
