NCC Approves MTN’s Request to Disconnect Glo Over Interconnect Debt

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given approval to MTN Nigeria to partially disconnect Globacom (Glo) from its network due to non-payment of interconnect charges. In a document titled “Pre-Disconnection Notice” dated Monday, the NCC informed the public and Glo subscribers about the decision.

The NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, signed the document, which stated that the commission had granted approval for the partial disconnection of Glo from MTN Nigeria. This action is a result of Glo’s failure to settle its interconnect charges with MTN.

According to the NCC, Glo was informed about MTN’s application for disconnection and was given the opportunity to respond and present its case. After reviewing the application and considering the circumstances surrounding the debt, the NCC concluded that Glo did not have sufficient or justifiable reasons for not paying the interconnect charges.

The commission notified all subscribers that it had approved the partial disconnection of Glo from MTN in accordance with the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators of 2012. The disconnection is set to take effect after 10 days from January 8, 2024.

Once the partial disconnection is implemented, Glo subscribers will no longer be able to make calls to MTN numbers but will still be able to receive calls from MTN users. However, inbound calls to the Glo network will still be allowed.

The NCC clarified that this disconnection will remain in place until further notice from the commission.
