The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the promotion of 5,196 of its staff members across the country. This development was disclosed in the commission’s daily bulletin issued by Mrs Adenike Tadese, the Director of Publicity and Voter Education, in Abuja on Thursday.

The promotions were a result of the 2023 promotion examination and evaluation conducted by the commission, demonstrating its commitment to staff welfare and development. Among those promoted, 55 deputy directors on Grade Level 16 were elevated to the rank of Director on Grade Level 17, while 54 assistant directors on GL 15 were promoted to deputy director cadre on GL 16. Additionally, 338 officers on GL 14 were promoted to Assistant Directors on GL 15, with the majority of promotions affecting 4,749 officers between GL 7 and 13.

In a related development, four directors of the commission have been directed to proceed on terminal leave in compliance with a directive from the Federal Government issued via a circular on July 27, 2023. The circular mandates all directors with 8 years or more of service to retire from the public sector. Two of the directors scheduled for terminal leave served as heads of departments at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, while the other two were deployed as Administrative Secretaries in the state offices.

However, it was clarified by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), that Clinical Officers in the medical cadre are exempt from the Federal Government Retirement Policy, as stated in Circular MH 7205/T31 dated September 7.
