The political dynamics in Anambra State have been shaped by a series of events and personalities in 2023. Key among these are the 2023 general elections, the emergence of Mr. Peter Obi as the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), the tenure of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the activities of other political actors.

The 2023 general elections played a significant role in altering the political landscape of Anambra State. While the state had already elected Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as governor in November 2021, the involvement of former governor Peter Obi as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate brought new dynamics to the state’s political scene. Despite not contesting for the governorship, Obi’s popularity and influence sparked intense politicking in the state.

The fear among many was that Obi’s influence could lead to a significant shift in legislative positions and potentially affect the presidential election results in Anambra. However, while this did not entirely materialize, it did prompt Soludo to take action to secure his position, resulting in APGA winning 17 out of 30 state assembly seats, with the Labour Party securing eight seats.

The involvement of Soludo in the political scene was notable, especially considering his previous association with APGA. However, his apparent opposition to Peter Obi’s candidacy and his support for the PDP’s Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the presidential election raised questions and polarized opinions.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) made significant gains in Anambra, particularly through defections by prominent figures like Senators Ifeanyi Ubah and Uche Ekwunife. This has bolstered the party’s prospects in the state, with APC members hopeful of making significant gains in the 2025 elections.

On the other hand, the once-dominant People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has seen a decline in its influence in Anambra. Internal conflicts and litigations have left the party without clear leadership in the state, leading to a loss of prominent stakeholders and a weakened presence.
