The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced February 3 as the date for re-run and by-elections in nine states across Nigeria. This decision was revealed by Sam Olumekun, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information Voter Education Committee, during the release of the timetable and schedule of activities for the elections in Abuja.

The by-elections are necessitated by the resignation or demise of members of the National and State Houses of Assembly, with vacancies declared by the Presiding Officers, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Speakers of State Houses of Assembly.

According to Mr Olumekun, the vacancies occurred across two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies in nine states of the federation. Additionally, the commission will conduct re-run elections resulting from the 2023 general election, as directed by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals.

A total of 35 constituencies are affected by these Court-ordered elections, with three covering entire constituencies and others involving only a few Polling Units. These elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously in all affected constituencies on Saturday, February 3.

Mr Olumekun emphasized that the timetable for the election, along with detailed delimitation data such as registration areas, polling unit names, the number of registered voters, and PVCs collected, has been uploaded to INEC’s website and social media platforms. This information serves as a guide for political parties and candidates and for public information.

He urged political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the specified timelines for the conduct of the election.
