National Assembly Rejects “Grossly Inadequate” Budget for Nigerian Judiciary

A joint committee comprising members from the Senate and House of Representatives in the National Assembly (NASS) has raised objections to the proposed budget for the Nigerian judiciary. In a move expressing their dissatisfaction, the committee deemed the allocation “grossly inadequate,” asserting that it could impede the judiciary’s capacity to function optimally.

Lawmakers, perturbed by the insufficiency of the current budget, emphasized its potential to hinder the judiciary’s ability to ensure fair, efficient, and timely delivery of justice. The concern centres around the essential resources required for the judiciary to operate effectively, raising questions about the adequacy of the proposed financial allocation.

In response to their discontent, the joint committee issued an ultimatum to the Minister of National Planning and the Director-General of the Budget Office. Both officials have been summoned to appear before the committee within the next 24 hours. The purpose of their appearance is to provide an explanation and justification for the budget allocation that has drawn criticism from members of the National Assembly.

This development reflects a critical moment in the ongoing budgetary process, where scrutiny is being applied to ensure that the judiciary, as a vital pillar of the Nigerian legal system, receives the necessary financial support to carry out its responsibilities effectively.
