The Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organisation has asserted that the possible release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), could significantly impact the political landscape in the Southeast, particularly affecting the popularity of Simon Ekpa and Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

According to a statement by the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Isiguzoro Okechukwu, the release of Nnamdi Kanu could relegate Simon Ekpa’s activities in the Southeast to historical archives, diminishing his influence.

The statement also suggested that Peter Obi’s standing in the region might experience a decline with Kanu’s return.

The organisation cautioned against certain Igbo political elites and opportunists attempting to claim credit for Kanu’s potential release, urging President Bola Tinubu not to entertain such visits or demands.

Ohanaeze emphasised that the credit for Kanu’s release should be solely attributed to President Tinubu.

The statement read, “We emphasise that the effects of Nnamdi Kanu’s release will gradually diminish the rising popularity of both Peter Obi and Simon Ekpa in the Southeast.

Additionally, from a security perspective, Ekpa’s disruptive activities and terrorist tendencies in the Southeast will be consigned to the annals of history.”

Ohanaeze further called on President Tinubu to remain steadfast in his decision-making process concerning Kanu’s potential release, assuring him of the support of the Igbo nation.

The organisation expressed confidence that President Tinubu would handle the matter with utmost care and consideration.
