The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, has committed to providing the necessary funds to ensure the swift completion of Nigeria’s Vice President’s official residence, which has been left unfinished.

Wike pledged to make the required finances available before December, with the aim of completing the project before May 29, 2024.

The Minister, who inspected the site in Abuja managed by Julius Berger, praised the contractor for resuming work without upfront payment from the government.

Wike disclosed that he had obtained the approval of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to expedite the completion of the project within the next eight months.

Despite the contractor, Julius Berger, proposing a revision of the contract sum from N7 billion to N15 billion due to escalating material costs, Wike affirmed the commitment of the Tinubu administration to finish the construction.

During the inspection, Wike assured the contractor that mobilisation funds would be provided before December, expressing confidence in completing the project on schedule.

He emphasised the determination to eradicate the narrative of abandoned projects, urging Julius Berger to dedicate its resources to ensure the timely completion of the residence.

The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Mr Shehu Ahmed, revealed that the project, outlined in the Abuja Master Plan, was awarded in 2010.

Adebowale Ademo, Director of Public Building at FCDA, provided insights into the building’s design, featuring three distinct living rooms on the ground floor, a private room for the Vice President, and various amenities.

Additionally, provisions were made for a Second Lady Private Lounge, a Chapel, a Mosque, and a dormitory for security personnel, with a screen-in facility at the entrance for incoming guests.

Representing Julius Berger, Mr Oliver Berger assured Minister Wike of the company’s commitment to completing the project on time.

The Minister’s announcement signifies a concerted effort by the government to see through the timely conclusion of critical infrastructure projects, ensuring the fulfillment of promises made to the Nigerian people.
