Lobbying Intensifies as Political Figures and Former Officials Eye Key Ambassadorial Appointments

State governors, former ministers, and officials from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, along with political associates of President Bola Tinubu, are actively lobbying for ambassadorial appointments in Nigeria.

This intensified lobbying follows the recall of all envoys from their foreign posts by the Federal Government on September 2, 2023, with a directive to return by October 31.

The lobbying involves key figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), members of the National Assembly, and retired military officers, among others.

The appointments are for positions in Nigeria’s 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates abroad.

There have been controversies surrounding the recall of ambassadors, with President Buhari’s government clarifying that only 25 career ambassadors, who had reached the retirement age or served for 35 years, were recalled.

The move was explained as allowing them to remain at their duty posts and granting an extension due to the upcoming elections.

Nigeria has a total of 109 missions globally, and the process of nominating ambassadors involves considerations of political loyalty, diplomatic experience, and strategic representation.

The lobbying efforts reflect the keen interest in securing these coveted diplomatic roles.

In January 2021, President Buhari had approved the posting of 95 envoys, including 43 career and 52 non-career ambassadors, to various diplomatic missions.

The recent recall directive has triggered a new wave of political maneuvering as individuals seek to fill these positions.

The lobbying underscores the significance of diplomatic roles and the influence wielded by those appointed to represent Nigeria on the global stage.

As the process unfolds, the government will likely consider a balance between political considerations and the need for qualified and experienced individuals to effectively represent the country’s interests abroad.
