In October 2023, Nigeria experienced a surge in security incidents, recording 935 incidents, 1,127 fatalities, and 518 abductions, according to a monthly security report by Beacon Consulting Ltd.

The report, covering the period October 1–31, 2023, highlighted a significant increase in security challenges compared to previous months.

The North-East region recorded the highest number of incidents, fatalities, and abductions, while the North-West region reported the highest number of civilian deaths.

Specifically, the report identified 466 security incidents, 433 fatalities, and 253 abductions across 62 local government areas in the North-East.

The conflict between non-state actors, including the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal Jihad (JAS), contributed to the rising fatalities in the region.

Beacon Consulting Limited’s managing director, Dr. Kabir Adamu, emphasised the need for a result-based framework and the utilization of tools for security risk management to address the drivers of insecurity in Nigeria.

The findings underscore the ongoing challenges the country faces in terms of security, with various regions experiencing different forms of violence, including insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes.
