SDP Presidential Candidate Calls for Focus on Leadership Integrity Over Electoral Act Amendments

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has expressed his disagreement with the proposed amendment of the Electoral Act by the Senate.

He emphasized that it’s the quality of leadership character that needs examination rather than constant legislative amendments.

Adebayo believes the focus should be on improving integrity at polling stations, preventing vote buying, and ensuring a fair election process.

He also discussed the challenges related to technology-based solutions, suggesting that technology alone won’t guarantee electoral integrity.

Regarding the call to strip the President of the power to appoint members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Adebayo questioned the practicality of such a change.

He argued that even more sensitive positions, such as Chief Justice of Nigeria, are appointed by the President, and the key issue is the character and integrity of the individuals in these positions.

Adebayo suggested that instead of taking away the President’s appointing power, the Senate should focus on ensuring thorough vetting of nominees and consider their suitability and character.

Adebayo also commented on the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the election of a prominent political figure, stating that the courts have upheld their precedents and acted in accordance with Nigerian law.

Concerning the economy, Adebayo mentioned that the President’s economic team is dealing with the consequences of their policy choices, indicating the need for factor cost stabilization to address current economic challenges.

He discussed the ideological commitment to certain economic policies and the potential consequences of maintaining such commitments.

This interview provides insights into Adebayo’s perspective on the electoral process, governance, and economic policies in Nigeria.
