The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has just proclaimed Peter Mbah, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of the Enugu State gubernatorial election held on Saturday.

As revealed by INEC, Mbah got 160,895 votes to defeat Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP), who received 157,552 votes while Uche Nnaji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got 14,575 votes, and the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance polled 17,983. Thus, Mbah got the mantle of leadership by a whisker as he defeated the LP with only 3,343 votes. It was gathered that the collation process became rowdy at a point on Wednesday, as some party representatives expressed displeasure with the process.

FIJ earlier reported that INEC suspended the collation process in the state to review the available results and address allegations of over-voting and election-related controversies. After reviewing the situation, the commission resumed the collation today, leading to the announcement of Mbah as the governor-elect.

According to the electoral body: “It will be recalled that our office in Obingwa Local Government Area was invaded by thugs yesterday Sunday 19th March 2023 and our officials held hostage in relation to the collation of results from the Local Government Area of Nsukka and Nkanu East.

“Consequently, the Commission hereby suspends the collation of results in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State and the two outstanding local government areas of Enugu State which are yet to be collated.”
