Sarah Ibrahim, a witness at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, has presented video evidence of how young Nigerians were massacred at the Lekki Toll Plaza on October 20 during last year’s #EndSARS protests.

Sarah also accused the 81 DIvision of the Nigeria Army of shooting indiscriminately at the protesters.

In one of the many video clips viewed by the panel, a number of injured protesters were seen drenched in blood. In another clip, a protester’s abdomen was seen ripped open, with the intestines protruding, by gunshots from the soldiers, while another protester was hit in the head.

According to Sarah, about 15 protesters were hit by bullets fired by the soldiers. She said the officers whisked away those protesters feared dead, including a certain Lekan Sanusi.

She also presented a video of a victim’s mother who talked about how her son was killed at the protest ground.

In the video, Ndifreke Sunday, mother of the victim, said her son Victor Sunday had relocated to Lagos, leaving her and his four siblings behind in Akwa Ibom. She lamented that till date, she still has not been able to retrieve the remains of her slain son.

In another video, a woman simply identified as Mrs Ajasa narrated how she recovered the corpse of her son from the swamp around the tollgate. Her son Abidemi Ajasa was a security volunteer on the protest ground.

Recently, Nigerians trooped to the streets to demand an end to SARS, a unit of the Police notorious for extrajudicial executions. The protest, tagged #EndSARS, lingered for weeks, continuing even after the Inspector General of Police (IGP) announced the scrapping of the unit and its replacement with Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) unit.

The angry protesters refused to leave the streets, insisting their demands were beyond replacing SARS with SWAT. The protests attracted the attention of the international community, and continued with youth blocking  major roads across the country until it was said to have been hijacked by hoodlums, thus banned. Policemen and soldiers injured and killed civilians, especially at the Lekki tollgate where a yet unknown number of peaceful protesters were massacred.

In January and February, FIJ published a chilling three-part investigation detailing the strongarm tactics being used to muzzle #EndSARS actvists into silence, and also listed and described how some of the protesters were massacred and others injured.

The investigation, done by perennial award-winning investigative journalist ‘Fisayo Soyombo, is currently on the shortlist of One World Media’s International Journalist of the Year award to be decided in June.

BF Borgers, an accounting firm owned by former US President Donald Trump, has been accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of engaging in widespread fraud and operating a “sham audit mill.” The SEC alleges that BF Borgers committed “deliberate and systemic failures,” including the fabrication of audit papers and false assurances to clients regarding compliance with accounting standards.

This fraudulent activity, described as “massive,” occurred between January 2021 and June 2023, impacting over 1,500 SEC filings and more than 500 public companies. As a consequence, the SEC has permanently barred BF Borgers from practicing as accountants before the agency and imposed a severe penalty, including a collective fine of $14 million against the firm and its owner, Benjamin Borgers.

In a statement, Gurbir Grewal, director of the SEC’s enforcement division, declared that Borgers and his “sham audit mill” have been permanently shut down. The SEC has notified public companies that engaged BF Borgers to seek new accounting firms.

Trump Media & Technology Group, chaired and majority-owned by Donald Trump, was among BF Borgers’ clients. While Trump Media may be the most high-profile client, BF Borgers served around 350 clients subject to SEC rules during the mentioned period. However, the SEC review only examined BF Borgers’ work for public companies, excluding its services to Trump Media when it was private.

Trump Media, despite its significant valuation on Wall Street exceeding $9 billion, generates limited revenue. Its social media platform, Truth Social, faces challenges, with a notable decline in average daily active US users on iOS and Android in April. Despite this, Donald Trump remains a prominent user on Truth Social.

In response to the SEC’s actions, a spokesperson for Trump Media expressed readiness to collaborate with new auditing partners in compliance with the SEC’s order. BF Borgers did not provide a comment on the allegations.

In summary, BF Borgers, owned by Donald Trump, faces severe consequences following accusations of fraud by the SEC. The firm’s practices, characterized as a “sham audit mill,” have led to permanent suspension and hefty fines. Trump Media, among BF Borgers’ clients, is navigating challenges despite its substantial valuation, particularly with its Truth Social platform experiencing a decline in user engagement.
