Egbin, Ikeja Disco divide over blackout in Ikorodu community

By Ajibola Osungbohun

Egbin Transmission Company blame Ikeja Electric’s failure to restore power, suggesting they may be prioritising other communities or factories.

Residents of Agbede decry the blackout in the community following a fire outbreak that damaged the transformer that supplies energy to the area at the Egbin transmission company in Ikorodu.

The community team visited the burnt site transmission company on Monday, 17th, 2025, to assess the level of damage to the transmission station.

Reacting to the visit, the team of the transmission company explained that “prior to the transformer burnout, production was at 100%. However, it’s now been reduced to 50%. Demonstrated how they’re generating 20% energy from another outlet at Surulere, resulting in a total production of 70%, with a 30% loss due to the burnt transformer.”

A report made available by the team of the community said Egbin accused Ikeja Electric Distribution, stating that the people of the community disregarded false information from Ikeja Electric that the transformer is not available on the planet or that the transformer has not yet been purchased.

“TCN told us to disregard false information from Ikeja Electric that the transformer is not available on the planet or the transformer is not yet purchased.”

“TCN claims they’re doing their best to maintain 70% production, but Ikeja Electric’s failure to restore power suggests they may be prioritising other communities or factories.”

Explaining further, it was mentioned that the burnt transformer was procured in 1983, and a stronger transformer (300 MVA) is available at an uncommissioned station in Ajah, which is more powerful than the 150MVA transformer that was burnt (260 megawatts).

Narrating to our reporter, the team said that they are not the ones responsible for providing them with energy and that Ikeja Electric Distribution should be held responsible.

“We are encouraged to hold Ikeja Electric responsible for failing to provide us with energy; moreover, TCN is not liable for band or billing.”

Egbin Transmission Company is ready to engage the Ikeja Electric Distribution if they deny any of the allegations they mentioned.

“TCN said they are ready to engage with the management of Ikeja Electric if indeed they denied what they told us, a meeting involving the 3 bodies concerned, which are TCN, Ikeja Electric, and Community.”
