The judge in the Federal High Court, Lagos, has told Erisco to withdraw its case against Mrs Chioma Egodi. He made the statement during a dramatic court session when the counsel for Erisco said he forgot evidence at home.
In late 2023, Mrs Chioma Egodi made a review of a product by Erisco Foods’ Nagiko Tomato Mix on Facebook, stating that it was mixed with sweetening, and she wondered if they could keep up with the quality.
This review led to Erisco not taking it lightly, which got her arrested, charged in court, and remanded until she was granted bail for the sum of ₦5M. Ever since then, the court has been adjourning the case due to insufficient evidence from the plaintiff.
A recent court hearing saw the judge of the High Court call for the withdrawal of the case due to the waste of time and advise Erisco to withdraw the case, stating there was no substantial basis for it, but the counsel representing Erisco insisted on the hearing.
Presenting evidence from Erisco, during the cross-examination process by the defence counsel, Inibehe Effiong, Esq., the Plaintiff called for the withdrawal, citing the issue of time wasting and that he left the additional evidence at home, and called for adjournment.
Reacting to the development, the defence counsel, Inibehe Effiong, Esq., requested that the court impose a compensation fine of ₦500,000 for the time wasted, noting that Erisco had already been urged by the judge to drop the case.
He further told us that the case has been adjourned to 21st and 22nd January 2026 for another cross-examination of the witness to be presented by IGP/Erisco and not the final judgement.
