Lagos NURTW Boss Sego Threatens Residents Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Sulaimon Popoola
Mustapha Adekunle, widely known as Sego, the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW), was caught on video issuing threats against residents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the video, which has since gone viral, Sego openly declared that anyone who votes against the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos will face severe consequences.
He insisted that he enjoys full support from those in government and vowed that the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, where APC lost in Lagos State would not be allowed to happen again.
His remarks have sparked outrage among Lagosians, with many accusing him of trying to intimidate over 20 million citizens and undermine the democratic process. Civil society groups, activists, and residents are now demanding his immediate arrest, warning that no union leader should hold the people hostage under the cover of political protection.
Reacting, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour who ran for Lagos state governor under Labour party during the 2023 general election, shared the video on his X handle this evening and wrote
“Violence is the last refuge of incompetence.
“The @OfficialDSSNG is no doubt aware of the NURTW’s directives to its members, urging them to Attack, hurt, maim, disrupt, intimidate, and harm opposition gatherings in Lagos, As we saw happen at my declaration at Alimosho and now threats after our successful gathering at Ajeromi.
“The President and his Lagos APC allies have controlled Lagos state for over 24 years, yet they have no record to campaign on instead they mobilize people like this to stifle opposition, yet send their own children abroad to benefit from good governance.
“By labeling opposition voices as “enemies of the President” and threatening those who fail to carry out these acts, the intent is to stifle democracy through fear.
“Let it be known that we are not intimidated. We make this statement for the record and to emphatically state that no one has a monopoly on violence. When this movie starts you will quickly realise we are the many you are the few.”
This is not the first time Sego and his allies have been linked to violent incidents. Just last week, his associate, popularly known as Shamelone, attacked a dispatch rider in public. The same Shamelone is also standing trial for the alleged killing of one Adeshina Rahman, a case now before the courts and adjourned to later in October.
With Sego’s threats now documented on video, pressure is mounting on security agencies to step in quickly and restore public confidence.
Many Lagos residents fear that failure to act could embolden further violence as the 2027 elections draw closer.
