As Nigeria celebrates her 65th year of Independence, the residents of the Akinlalu community in the Ife North Local Government of Osun State are reeling from the incident which is said to have claimed the lives of three in a brutal attack by the men of the Western security network, also known as Amotekun, who stormed the community to unleash terror on them in two of their official vehicles in a reaction to the fact that some people in the community snatched two of their ammunition. During the attack, it was gathered that they shot sporadically, causing serious bullet injuries to some identified residents of the community whose names were made available: Adeagbo Kadijat ‘f’, 22 years; Oke-Ila Oyebamiji ‘f’, 60 years; and Fayomi Toheeb ‘m’, 19 years. Further information alleged that three persons lost their lives during the shooting, namely Ibrahim Oyebamiji (m), 26 years old; Sefiu Oyebamiji (m); and Abiola Olutayo (m), and their corpses were taken away by Amotekun operatives.
In an interview with the Amotekun Corps, it was made known to GovernMEND that their men were attacked first by hoodlums in the community while they were responding to urgent calls from the residents of the community. The Corps reported that during the ambush, two service rifles were snatched.
The statement reads, “Our men were reinforced to dispatch when they came under heavy gunfire at a barricaded junction into Akinlalu, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire lasting over an hour. According to their account, three suspected attackers lost their lives, arrests were made, and the stolen firearms were recovered from a hideout.”
However, as of the time of this report, the commissioner of police in the state has instructed his men to mobilise to the area and has recovered thirteen (13) expended cartridges and moved all injured victims to hospital for medical treatment. The situation, which initially sparked tension, was brought under control by the police, who persuaded angry residents not to take the law into their own hands.
