The Civil Society Coalition for Mandate Protection (CSC-MAP), comprised of 45 civil society and community-based organizations across Nigeria, has appealed to global leaders including the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the United States, the British Prime Minister, and the German Chancellor, to intervene in urging President Bola Tinubu to revoke a N40 billion oil pipeline contract awarded to Mr. Government Ekpemuopolo Tompolo.

In a letter titled “Proliferation Of Arms In Nigeria And West Africa: Request For Immediate Intervention By The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), The Governments Of The United States, Britain And Germany On Threat To Regional Security And The Proliferation Of Arms In Nigeria,” CSC-MAP outlined their concerns. The coalition emphasized the significance of the UN Security Council members’ roles in influencing critical issues affecting global peace and stability.

CSC-MAP urged the leaders to impress upon President Tinubu the need to terminate the contract awarded to Tompolo, citing concerns over regional security and the proliferation of arms. They stressed the importance of international bodies like the UN Security Council, OPEC, and regional organizations like ECOWAS and the African Union in addressing the issue.

The coalition highlighted the potential consequences of awarding such contracts to individuals associated with armed insurgency, banditry, and violence, calling for a halt to the practice. They also called for an inquiry into the proliferation of arms in the Niger Delta region and emphasized Nigeria’s obligation to abide by international treaties and conventions regarding arms proliferation and indigenous rights.

Overall, CSC-MAP’s letter underscores the urgent need for international intervention to address the security implications of awarding oil pipeline contracts to individuals with links to armed groups. They advocate for adherence to international standards and the protection of human rights in addressing these concerns.
