Rt Hon Enema Paul, the Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, has tendered his resignation during a plenary session, citing deteriorating health as the reason for his departure from office.
In an emotional letter read on the House floor, Rt Hon Enema Paul expressed his gratitude and admiration for Governor Yahaya Bello, praising the governor’s unwavering support and care during his tenure. He also acknowledged the love and prayers extended to him by the governor and the 7th Kogi State House of Assembly.
Rt Hon Enema Paul revealed that his health issues date back to 2011 and despite seeking medical attention abroad with the assistance and permission of Governor Bello, his condition persisted, causing his health to deteriorate further each day. He mentioned the continued request from the overseas hospital for his return for ongoing treatment.
Considering the severity of his health condition, Rt Hon Enema Paul submitted his resignation, seeking a year-long absence for medical care abroad, which the House accepted.
Following his resignation, the Clerk of the House, Mr Chogudo Sule Ahmed, called for nominations for the vacant Deputy Speaker position. Hon Abu Jibrin of Ajaokuta state constituency nominated Hon Ojoma Comfort Nwuchiola from Ibaji state constituency for the position, and this nomination was seconded by Hon Seyi Bello representing Kabba/Bunu state constituency. Subsequently, the Clerk administered the oath of office to the newly nominated Deputy Speaker, Hon Ojoma Comfort Nwuchiola.
This development in the Kogi State House of Assembly reflects the challenges faced by public officials in balancing their duties with personal health concerns. The appointment of Hon Ojoma Comfort Nwuchiola as the new Deputy Speaker signals a transition in leadership within the assembly.
